Student Spotlight - Lucy Ross
“I have loved studying with Perth College UHI. It’s such a supportive and encouraging environment to be in.”
Lucy is currently studying her course via distance learning, so we had a chat with her to see how she is getting on and find out what her plans for the future are 👇
Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Lucy Ross and I’m from Inverness.
What course are you studying at Perth College UHI?
I’m currently studying Higher English via distance learning, it’s my first time studying with Perth College UHI.
How did you hear about Perth College UHI?
I was looking for distance courses and came across Perth College UHI on google. I’ve also seen things pop up on social media.
What were you doing before you came to college?
Before coming to Perth College UHI, I was enjoying time with my tiny human - Rory. I was midway through my maternity leave when Covid happened, so I took the time to enjoy being a mum and created memories.
Why did you decide to pick this course?
I decided to choose Higher English, via distance learning, because I needed a higher at level B in order to get into university. I really enjoyed English in school and so thought it was a good idea to study something I liked.
How have you found doing a distance learning course?
I have really enjoyed doing my course via distance learning. I wasn’t sure how I would find it, but so far it has been excellent. You have to be extremely organised in order to meet deadlines, as it’s not the same as being in classes and getting reminded of due dates. However, that’s part of being an adult, you take responsibility for your own learning.
What is your favourite thing about the course?
My favourite thing about the course is the amount of incredible support from my amazing lecturer Fiona. Nothing is too much trouble, even if I only have one question, she will take time out of her day to help me. She is lovely and Perth College UHI are so lucky to have someone as dedicated and knowledgeable as her.
Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?
I’m really hoping that one of my achievements will be to get a B in this course, but I know that will only happen if I put in the hard work.
Have you enjoyed studying at Perth College UHI? Any highlights?
I have loved studying with Perth College UHI. It’s such a supportive and encouraging environment to be in. I often receive emails about the services offered by Perth College UHI and it’s honestly amazing the effort that is put in to support students and staff. It shows you really care, which is lovely to see.
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of college?
Outside of college I like to spend time with my family, travel (maybe soon), read interesting books, and be a support person for mums who have suffered birth trauma.
What is your future career plans?
I have been offered a place at RGU to study Midwifery this September. It has always been my dream to become a midwife, but everything really does happen at the right time. I travelled and lived abroad prior to Covid, so it feels like now is the right time. I would like to specialise in bereavement midwifery following my own experience of baby loss. I have a lovely tattoo of a baby and a rainbow sits above it, whenever I feel sad, I look at it and I’m reminded of why I’m doing this.
And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at Perth College UHI?
For anyone thinking of studying at Perth College UHI, just do it. The staff are so lovely and supportive, the building looks nice too! There are so many options in terms of courses, there’s something for everyone. I’ve loved it.
