Student Spotlight - Amanda Robottom

“You are never too old to try something new, embrace all new opportunities.”

With a very busy home life, the idea of obtaining a degree can seem out of reach. However, Amanda has managed to juggle all aspects of her life to excel in her studies. She chats to us about her journey so far 👇

What is your name, and where are you from?

Amanda Robottom - living just outside Elgin, Moray.

What course are you studying at Perth College UHI, and what year are you currently in?

BA Business and Management and I am in Year 3.

How did you hear about Perth College UHI?

I studied HND Administration and Information Technology online at Perth College UHI, after completing my HNC at Moray College.

What were you doing before you came to college?

I was an Admin Assistant for a local building firm.

Why did you decide to pick this course?

I followed on from the HNC I studied at Moray College. I enrolled on to the HNC part-time at first and then was made redundant during Covid, so then swapped the course to full-time.

What is your favourite thing about the course?

The knowledge I am gaining and the friends I have made.

Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?

Completing all assessments to the best of my ability and never getting bad marks or feedback. Being nominated for student rep by fellow students, as well as winning the SQA Local College Award for Perth College UHI at the recent graduation.

What knowledge, skills and experience have you gained from your course that will help you when you leave Perth College UHI?

Never being afraid to put myself forward, feeling confident in the work I submit, and never being afraid to ask for advice.

Have you undertaken a placement or work experience whilst at Perth College UHI?

Yes, during my HND, I undertook a work placement at a well-established private school in which I learnt a lot and gained experience. Whilst on the placement, this highlighted the need for extra resource in the department and I was offered the opportunity to apply for a position in the school - this was a great confidence boost. I did however turn this down as I wanted to continue with my studies and look at other options. This was a fantastic chance for me to become the confident person I am today.

Have your lecturers been supportive during your studies?

100%, yes. The lecturers have been amazing throughout all my courses and have given me guidance and shown me understanding when it meant a lot to me. During my studies, I have had some personal problems in my family life, and it was the dedication from the lecturers that kept me going. The support from each one of them was valued daily from me, and I do believe if I didn’t have their support, I would have not received the amazing marks I have.

Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?

The ability to stop overthinking everything, as well as being confident about my work I submit. Two years ago, I would never have said I would be completing a degree. I am a mum of three and my husband serves in the RAF and is away a lot of the time. Juggling home life, as well as working everyday part time and studying, can take its toll sometimes. However, becoming the person I am today shows my determination, I am hugely proud of myself.

What do you like about the campus/facilities?

I have only visited the campus in Perth once so far and everyone there was very inviting and friendly. It seems bright and spacious. Everyone walking around with a smile on their face gave me a positive vibe.

Have you enjoyed studying at Perth College UHI? Any highlights?

Yes, very much so. Highlights for me would have to be the support from both lecturers and fellow students, to whom I can now call friends.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of college?

My life is very busy; however, I do like to take walks and I am a very sociable person.

What are your future career plans?

Currently I am looking at options and have joined the mentor programme, I am hoping this will help in the direction I choose at the end of the year.
