Student Spotlight - Jenny Brayshaw
The COVID-19 pandemic was devastating for many people, in lots of different ways. However, for some people, it gave them the confidence and courage to follow their passion and change career paths. Whilst on furlough, Jenny decided to take a chance and apply for a course at UHI Perth.
What is your name, and where are you from?
My name is Jenny, and I’m from quite a few places. I was born in Switzerland, but lived in Zimbabwe until I was 10. I then lived in England until I was 17. I moved to Scotland, for a boy who I married, and have lived here for the last 13 years. I’m 32 years old, and have 3 children.
What course are you studying at UHI Perth, and what year are you currently in?
NQ Engineering Systems Level 6
What were you doing before you came to college?
Before I came to College, I was a cook in a bakery/café. I enjoyed my job immensely, but ultimately it was a job to pay the bills - it wasn’t what I wanted to do permanently.
Why did you decide to pick this course?
I’ve always enjoyed fixing things; it started with fixing the dishwasher, and gradually moved up to fixing my own car.
During the pandemic I was furloughed, and ultimately lost my job. I had a friend who encouraged me to apply for College to do more of what I enjoy and I haven’t looked back. I started at Level 4 NQ Engineering skills, which had all the foundational engineering elements that I had missed from being self-taught.
What is your favourite thing about the course?
I have really loved using Computer Aided Draughting (CAD), but also really enjoy working in the workshop. It feels great to start out with just a drawing and finish with a recognisable finished project!
Has there been any stand out/memorable moments from your course?
Until now, I have always worked to pay the bills, and quite often there is no room to be fussy, you just have to take what jobs are available. I never had engineering as a goal, more of a hobby, so it felt quite alien coming into a sector that I had no real experience in, only blind enthusiasm! Over time, the lecturers helped me develop my blind enthusiasm into marketable skills and ultimately have enabled me to get a job in engineering. Being offered a job in engineering was a really REALLY big moment!
What do you like about the campus?
I’ve really enjoyed the cafeteria as a place to talk to the other students about what we’re studying. The climbing wall is also a great place to unwind!
Have you enjoyed studying at Perth College UHI?
It’s been brilliant, I’ve enjoyed every minute.
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of college?
Outside of college, I do a lot of trail running and spend as much time outdoors as I can.
What are your plans, for after you finish your course?
I will be starting a job in Engineering but will continue to study my Engineering HNC part-time.
And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?
If you’re unsure of joining the College, just give them a call and talk about your concerns. All the staff are really helpful and genuinely want you to be there. I was worried financially, and regarding childcare, and both these concerns were completely solvable.
