Student Spotlight - Lauren Laird
“My favourite thing about the course is our Tuesday night service in the restaurant. It is such an incredible experience getting to serve the customers food that we love cooking!”
As part of the Food Studies and Hospitality courses, students have a chance to be a part of our training restaurant. This is a fast-paced restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and evening meals to visitors, staff, and students, and means students get real-life experience preparing and serving.
Lauren joined us straight from school and is loving her time so far at UHI Perth 👩🍳
What is your name, and where are you from?
Hi! I’m Lauren Laird. I am from Kilmarnock but, during my studies, I stay in the student accommodation just at the end of the road! (literally).
What course are you studying at UHI Perth, and what year are you currently in?
I am currently studying HNC Professional Cookery. I am hoping to either move onto year 2 of Food, Nutrition Textiles Education or HND Professional Cookery.
How did you hear about UHI Perth?
I heard about UHI Perth on UCAS and social media.
What were you doing before you came to UHI Perth?
I had just finished school and wanted to continue my studies in the hospitality industry.
Why did you decide to pick this course?
I had accepted a place for a course in Kilmarnock, which was well below my work ability. After declining the course offer, Rhona (UHI Perth Lecturer and my now PAT) phoned me the day before the induction at Perth was due to start. I went to the induction on the Tuesday, had to get student accommodation sorted, and then moved in on the Sunday. And the rest is history!
What is your favourite thing about the course?
The course for myself is so interesting, all the different modules make it more exciting as it is something different all the time! However, my favourite thing about the course is our Tuesday night service in the restaurant. It is such an incredible experience getting to serve the customers food that we love cooking! In the kitchen, we all support each other - we are like a family.
Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?
The most memorable moment for me on this course was the Andrew Fairlie scholarship day. I was fortunate to be able to assist chef Darren Seggie, who was lucky enough to win and gain a year’s Andrew Fairlie scholarship. This was a very informative day and I even got to meet famous chefs such as Sat Bains! However, the week of the Christmas shop and high teas was a great time too.
What knowledge, skills and experience have you gained from your course that will help you when you leave UHI Perth?
I have realised how interesting and entertaining the hospitality industry is. But mainly I have gained confidence in not just myself, but my cooking ability too! Clive Lamb (Chef Lecturer) is so understanding and will always help you with your dishes and any questions you have.
Have you undertaken a placement or work experience whilst at UHI Perth?
I am due to complete my work placement at a local high school in the home economics department. I am looking forward to this experience.
Have your lecturers been supportive during your studies?
I couldn’t fault the support the lecturers have given during my studies. It made it a lot easier moving away from home at a young age knowing you had lecturers to talk to and support you. Especially Rhona and Shirley! Legends!
Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?
I have been lucky enough to assist another student chef in a competition, we were lucky enough to get into round 2 in Glasgow which is happening at the end of next month. I am looking forward to it and gaining more experience.
What do you like about the campus/facilities?
I like that it is a smaller campus as you get to know everyone much easier - more of an inclusive feel.
Have you enjoyed studying at UHI Perth? Any highlights?
Yes! I have loved every minute of it, meeting friends for life and studying your dream course -what’s not to love?
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of your studies?
I enjoy going to concerts and spending time with my friends and family! I also love music - especially Lewis Capaldi.
What are your future career plans?
My dream has always been to be a Home Economics teacher. I couldn’t see myself doing anything else.
And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?
Go for it, you won’t regret it. You’ll make lifelong friendships, and it will be the best years of your life!
