Student Spotlight - Natasha Gatt

Student Spotlight - Natasha Gatt

The global pandemic highlighted the importance of our Hospitality and Food Studies sector, with businesses keen to secure trained staff to support their business success. As it is one of Scotland’s largest industries, there are a wealth of rewarding job opportunities available.

In this week’s blog, we meet a student who was looking to explore the career options  available in the hotel industry and returned to UHI Perth to upskill and diversify her skillset.

Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Natasha Gatt. My ethnic origin is Zambian Scottish, and I am from Perthshire.

What course are you studying at UHI Perth?

I am studying Hospitality, and this is my second year.

How did you hear about UHI Perth?

After leaving high school, and while working as a waitress, I decided to study travel and tourism here back in 2007.

What were you doing before you came to UHI Perth?

I was managing a family housekeeping business.

Why did you decide to pick this course?

I decided to pick this course, because after working in Housekeeping for a decade and gaining a lot of experience in that field of work, I decided to apply for Hospitality to try and get my foot in the door in the hotel industry or hotel management. I was interviewed by my lecturer Rhona, who was one of my lecturers back when I studied travel and tourism. Thankfully I was given another chance to study what I enjoy the most.

What is your favourite thing about the course?

Serving our customers in the Treetops restaurant.

Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?

I would say the most standout/memorable moment is recently attending the Hospitality Industry Trust (HIT) Scotland conference event with Ela and Ype our lecturers and a group of hospitality students, it was a fab day out.

What knowledge, skills and experience have you gained from your course that will help you when you leave UHI Perth?

Where do I start! I am becoming more professional with working as a team member; setting tables for formal silver service which I wouldn’t have been able to do before I started studying; and ensuring our customers receive an excellent experience. I have just recently learned how to fold different napkin folds for a busy restaurant, private dining, and banqueting

Have you undertaken a placement or work experience whilst at UHI Perth?

I am in the process of taking a work placement in a hotel.

Have your lecturers been supportive during your studies?

Our lectures have been very supportive with our studies.

Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?

I successfully participated in the 30th Anniversary for the Scottish Chef’s Lunch at Scottish Gas Murrayfield in November 2024.

What do you like about the campus/facilities?

I like the food court and library facilities.

Have you enjoyed studying at UHI Perth?

I am enjoying studying at UHI Perth and meeting new connections.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of your studies?

Traveling to interesting places and listening to music.

What are your future career plans?

My future career plans are getting into Hotel Management. Studying Hospitality is opening doors for me getting a dream career.

And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?

My advice to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth would be go for it! Especially if you have a passion for it!
