Student Spotlight - Veronika Sitkei

If you’re a good organiser, enjoy taking responsibility and communicating with people, then a job in administration or management could be an ideal career for you.

Administration and management jobs exist in all industries, in both the public and private sector, so these graduates are always in demand. The number of administrative and secretarial employees in Scotland has increased from 246,800 in December 2023, to 251,200 in March 2024.*

In this week’s blog, we meet an international student intending to join this job pool by updating her skill set.

Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Veronika, and I am from Hungary but moved to Scotland nine and a half years ago and to Perth nearly five years ago.

What course are you studying at UHI Perth, and what year are you currently in?

I am currently studying HNC Admin and IT. Last year I did NQ Business, Accounting and Administration.

How did you hear about UHI Perth?

I heard about it from friends years ago and I always hoped one day I will be able to come here to study.

What were you doing before you came to UHI Perth?

I was a stay-at-home mum for my three-year-old son. Before this, I worked in a warehouse environment and in hospitality for years. Back then, because of my full-time jobs, I couldn’t pick up a full-time course as well, but when my little boy turned two, I finally had the chance to join UHI Perth last year.

Why did you decide to pick this course?

I was always interested in this course. In Hungary, I finished my studies in a similar qualification, however things have really changed so I thought it would be better to start this course from the beginning. This time it feels more enjoyable and interesting as we cover a little bit of everything, accounting, business etc. Plus, learning in a different language makes it more challenging for me!

What is your favourite thing about the course?

I love the fact that it’s not just learning how to use excel, word, and other office tools like this, we also have units that covers accountancy and business related-topics, so the knowledge we gain through the years will be more valuable and open more opportunities to apply for a better job.

Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?

Honestly, in 2023, I entered UHI Perth with one goal; to complete the NQ level then go and look for an office related job. I clearly remember the day when I finished and as I walked out, I decided that I wished to continue my studies here for longer at least until the HND, then possibly until the first BA level. This day was just before the Christmas holidays and, until then, I always got so much amazing feedback from the lecturers that it just gave me the motivation that I can progress further.

What knowledge, skills and experience have you gained from your course that will help you when you leave UHI Perth?

IT skills are a big one here. I think alongside a little bit of everything that can be useful in an office environment, being able to deal with basic accountancy-related tasks, marketing, knowing about business law, are all very helpful. Last year we had to complete a work placement where I learned so much and I keep learning every time I am there.

Have you undertaken a placement or work experience whilst at UHI Perth?

During my NQ level, I was required to complete a work placement and was fortunate enough to find an incredible opportunity at a local taxi company. I joined their dispatch office, where I gained experience with their system and learned the dynamics of an office environment. I’m especially grateful, as this placement led to my current role with them, and I’ve had the privilege of working there ever since.

Have your lecturers been supportive during your studies?

Absolutely. There’s no such thing as a ‘silly’ question. Anytime I’ve asked for help, I’ve always received support, patience, and guidance. Without the amazing lecturers I had last year (and continue to have this year) I wouldn’t have been able to achieve the results I did.

Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?

At the 2024 Prizegiving Ceremony, I was absolutely thrilled to be awarded with the NQ Business, Accounting and Administration Cup for Academic Excellence. Without all the support and help I got from my PAT and lecturers last year, I am not sure I would have completed the year this successfully. I am forever grateful for everything at UHI Perth.

What do you like about the campus/facilities?

UHI Perth offers a great variety of activities, including options for working out and beauty treatments. It also seems well equipped with resources to support a wide range of courses.

Have you enjoyed studying at UHI Perth? Any highlights?

Yes, joining UHI Perth has genuinely been a life-changing experience for me. It's opened so many new opportunities and helped me grow in ways I didn't expect.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of your studies?

My main hobby is weight training, but I also enjoy many activities that involve moving - such as running, hiking, or simply going for long walks.

What are your future career plans?

My goal is to continue developing my skills and grow within an office environment.

And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?

It’s never too late to study, so don’t hesitate to apply and join UHI Perth. You’ll never regret this decision! 🙂 It might be challenging at times, but everybody is there to help you through your years.
