Student Spotlight - Kenneth Madriaga

If you’re looking to pursue a career in the motor vehicle service and repair industry, the Motor Vehicle Department at UHI Perth offers lots of challenging and rewarding opportunities. Our courses are aimed at developing core practical skills, theoretical knowledge, and employability skills. They are grouped into two distinct areas: Automotive Mechanical and Automotive Body and Painting. In this week’s blog, we meet one of our current students 👇🚗

Can you introduce yourself?

I am Kenneth Madriaga from Blairgowrie.

What course are you studying at UHI Perth?

SVQ Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.

How did you hear about UHI Perth?

From a family member who also attended the University.

What were you doing before you came to UHI Perth?

I was working as a healthcare assistant in Northlands Care Home.

Why did you decide to pick this course?

Growing up I have always been interested in cars and their mechanics. I think it’s mainly influenced by my uncle who owned a garage in the Philippines, and it was where I used to always hang out.

What is your favourite thing about the course?

All aspects of my course are interesting, and I learn new things all the time, but the practical side of it is definitely the part that I enjoy.

Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?

Yes, there are many memorable moments I would always cherish from my course. One of which was when I won an Academic Excellence award. I will also never forget when I landed an apprenticeship at Auto Services Perth, it was one of the best things that happened this year. Furthermore, I was a finalist for the UHI Perth Apprentice of the Year at the Perthshire Chamber of Commerce Star Awards in November 2023.

What knowledge, skills and experience have you gained from your course that will help you when you leave UHI Perth?

I learned to value professionalism even more. I also learned that patience and resilience are important qualities to have and not just intelligence. As for the knowledge and skills that I have acquired, I learned how to diagnose cars and read complex diagrams.

Have you undertaken a placement or work experience whilst at UHI Perth?

Yes, I am currently an apprentice at Auto Services Perth.

Have your lecturers been supportive during your studies?

Yes, they are always helpful.

Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?

I won an Academic Excellence award, I also received a tools award from Perth Guildry, and was a finalist for the UHI Perth Apprentice of the Year at the Perthshire Chamber of Commerce Star Awards.

What do you like about the campus/facilities?

I like our workshop area.

Have you enjoyed studying at UHI Perth? Any highlights?

Yes, aside from the knowledge and skills that I have acquired, I also made friends.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of your studies?

I enjoy cycling and playing basketball.

What are your future career plans?

To secure a stable job as a technician.

And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?

UHI Perth is excellent at providing new learnings, both in theoretical and practical aspects.
