Student Spotlight - JohnPaul Taylor
We follow NQ Level 6 Hairdressing student, JohnPaul Taylor, for a typical day on campus 💇♂️
How does your day start?
I am a very early riser, getting up to let my five dogs out into the garden. Then I make a nice strong coffee to set myself up for the day. Putting on some uplifting music, I jump in the shower and get myself ready - making sure my hair is in place and all my Hairdressing kit is packed before I leave for college.
What is the first thing you do when you get to college?
I like to go for breakfast in Goodlyburn, where I have a roll with bacon and egg and then feel guilty about eating it - I would like to be vegan.
What is your favourite thing about the course?
I enjoy all the practical aspects of the course, especially now we have clients, as during Covid-19 this was not possible. Now that clients are back, my confidence is improving - as is my technical skills. Having dyslexia, it has always made me doubt my academic ability, but during this year I have managed and improved with each unit, something I never thought I would say.
How have you found college life?
I have enjoyed coming to college in a new city and have made many new friends in students and staff. I love the sense of community here in the college - from lecturers, to students, and all the staff working in cafes and shop.
My favourite part of college life is being part of something that matters. I am here improving my life and hopefully anyone else that I can help.
Has there been any standout/memorable moments?
I am most proud of the person I have become after my two years here. I have 4 qualifications: Hairdressing, Barbering, Makeup, and Counselling Skills - and I am very pleased of what I have achieved.
What would your advice be for anyone thinking about studying at Perth College UHI?
My advice for anyone looking to join the college is ‘do it’, simple as that! Join and this is the first step of the rest of your lives.
College has opened doors for me - I came to do hair and I am leaving with so much more.
Perth College UHI can’t get rid of me easily, it took me a while to pluck up the courage to come to study but now I don’t want to leave so, I am coming back next year to do beauty!
