We chatted to a current student to hear how they were getting on 👇
Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Melanie, and I am from Kinross but now stay in Perth.
What course are you studying at UHI Perth, and what year are you currently in?
I started studying Hairdressing at Level 5 last year (2023) and I'm currently studying my Hairdressing Level 6.
How did you hear about UHI Perth?
I know a lot of people who have come here as I grew up semi-local.
What were you doing before you came to UHI Perth?
Before deciding to study, I had been on maternity leave.
Why did you decide to pick this course?
I picked hairdressing because I started my apprenticeship when I was 16 and never completed it due to unfortunate circumstances which lead to me leaving the industry completely for nine years. I have always loved doing hair so I thought I would give it another go after having my kids and I haven’t regretted it.
What is your favourite thing about the course?
The hands-on salon time.
Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?
My most memorable thing is my final cutting assessment last year. Knowing I had achieved my Level 5 and would be returning to complete my Level 6.
Have you created any haircuts or hair ups that you have been really proud of?
My avant-garde set for my ‘mad hatter’ inspired set from this year has been one of the most fun to plan. I haven’t yet done it on a human but I’m excited for this.
What knowledge, skills and experience have you gained from your course that will help you when you leave UHI Perth?
All of the skills you would expect to learn as a hairdresser, cutting, colouring etc. Last year, we had work placement - which was nice to be in the industry environment. I am looking forward to this year's work placement.
Working with my tutors has increased confidence in my skills as a hairdresser.
Have your lecturers been supportive during your studies?
Across both years, my lecturers have been an amazing support though a lot of things both educational and personal. They have really pushed me when I’ve needed the motivation to keep going.
Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?
Last year I completed both Level 5 and 6 numeracy which is something I never thought I would achieve as it was my worst subject in school!
What do you like about the campus/hairdressing facilities?
I like the active salon - getting to practice in a salon environment really helps boost confidence and timing.
Have you enjoyed studying at UHI Perth? Any highlights?
Yes, studying at Perth has given me so many opportunities to grow as a person and as a student.
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of your studies?
When I’m not doing hair, I am spending time with my kids, family, and friends. I enjoy reading and gaming.
What are your future career plans?
I’d like to go work in a salon for a little while then go and work for myself focusing on hair extensions and creative colouring.
