Alumni Spotlight - Magdalena Mazurkiewicz
Studying for a Hospitality Management qualification at Perth College UHI will give you the knowledge and hands-on skills to succeed in a managerial position in the growing hospitality industry. Now successfully managing a hotel near Aviemore, Magdalena chats to us about the impact studying at Perth College UHI had on her career.
Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Magdalena Mazurkiewicz. Iβm originally from Poland, however I have been in the UK for 15 years.
What course did you study at Perth College UHI, and in what year did you complete your studies?
I had the pleasure to start my HNC/HND Hospitality Management course at Perth College UHI in 2017.
How did you hear about Perth College UHI?
I heard about Perth College UHI through their own website, whilst I was searching for something to do outside of work π
What were you doing before you came to Perth College UHI?
I worked as a supervisor in Strathgarry Hotel in Pitlochry, which is now known as McKays.
Why did you decide to pick this course?
To learn more about the hospitality industry and to develop my existing knowledge, but also to meet the criteria to become a manager.
What was your favourite thing about the course?
My favorite thing about the course was the amazing people and lecturers who I met during this period. They gave me huge encouragement and support and pushed me when I needed to be pushed. π I made friends for life.
Were there any standout/memorable moments from your course?
Visiting Gleneagles and the London hospitality days. All the trips were memorable, not only from the knowledge point of view, but we had loads of fun.
Did you have a favourite dish that you made during your time studying?
I still remember when all the students had to learn how to make cocktails and try them. Trying them was the best part!
What knowledge, skills and experience did you gain from your course that have helped you since leaving Perth College UHI?
Since leaving college, I have gained an enormous working knowledge about legislation; the food and drink industry; sustainability; accountancy; HR; finance; accommodations services; and much more. I gained theoretical and practical knowledge, which helped me to run a day-to-day business. This course improved my confidence and interpersonal skills.
What did you think about the styles of teaching, and the support you received from staff?
The style of teaching I received from staff was extraordinary. They have patience, even if they must repeat things 10 times - so I founded whole study process very relaxing.
Did you undertake a placement or work experience whilst at Perth College UHI?
Whilst at Perth College UHI, I undertook my placement at my previous workplace as the college allowed me to do this.
What did you like about the campus? Were the Food Studies and Hospitality facilities good?
I really liked the campus: the library, the food hall, and the discounted prices on beauty and hair treatments.
What have you been up to since graduation? Are you currently employed?
Since graduation, I was promoted from Supervisor to Manager at Mckays Pitlochry. Now I am running a 34 bedroom hotel β The Boat Country Inn & Restaurant.
Do you feel your studies have helped you with your career?
The course helped me with my career enormously and I am using the knowledge I gained continuously.
What is your future career plans?
Building my future in the UK with my lovely dog Lilly, daughter Susan, and her child Antonio.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at Perth College UHI?
Donβt hesitate to study at Perth College UHI. Be strong and consistent and you will be able to achieve your dream job. If I have done it, you can do it.
