Alumni Spotlight - Iain Mackenzie

Studying at Perth College UHI gives you the perfect opportunity towards securing a successful future and former Sport and Fitness student, Iain Mackenzie, is proof of that. Having started at NC level, Iain then went on to graduate with a First-Class Honours degree and is now successfully working in his chosen career. He shares his journey with us 👇

Did you consider other universities when you were deciding to study?

Yes – It was between Perth College UHI and Robert Gordon. I chose Perth as it was closer to home (Aviemore) and the cost of living was considerably lower.

Why was this right course for you?

The course had a clear pyramid effect on how to gain entry to a PDGE in teaching. The route I took gave me the option to leave school early and pursue my career aspiration quicker, but also giving me the flexibility to change my mind about my future career - as it was not a specific teaching course.

What do you think about the style of teaching and the support you receive from tutors and lecturers?

The way the course is structured and delivered by the lecturers is efficient, supportive, and fully adaptable. The lecturers try their best to get you through the course with the best possible results.

Have you undertaken any student placements?

Yes, Aviemore Primary School (my old primary school, Kingussie High School (my old high school) and Perth Academy.

What career direction would you like to take after studying?

Physical Education Teacher or Primary Education Teacher.

How do you feel your studies will help you in your career progression?

The entry requirements for both PDGE’s are closely related to what the coaching and degree programme offer. The experience gained on the coaching and degree programme also relates to the experience preferred for the PDGE’s.

What advice would you give to those considering studying?

Nothing you do is easy to achieve. If you didn’t do so well at school, then UHI will have a route for you. Even if it takes an extra year or two, the end goal will always be there if you apply yourself and try your hardest - you will make it eventually.

What are your favourite things about Perth College UHI?

The facilities are outstanding. The sports department have a specialist in every aspect of the sporting industry and are willing to help anyone to achieve their goals.

Best thing about living in the Highlands and Islands?

The opportunities the surroundings have to offer, with indoor and outdoor education.

Anything else you feel like telling us about your experience at Perth College UHI?

I started at SCQF level 5 and have now graduated from the Bsc (Hons) Sport and Fitness Degree , with a First-Class Honours. The last year was the hardest in terms of academia and general life. However, I have been supported the whole way through from UHI and have come out on top. I have secured myself two jobs in two different independent schools and work for the best gymnastics club in Perth and Kinross. If I did not go to Perth College UHI, I would not have gained the knowledge and experience I have to this day.
