Tell us about yourself
I moved from Slovenia to Scotland in 2016 and the same year started to study at Perth College UHI on the Level 6 Sport and Fitness Course. I am now in year 4 of the BSc (Hons) Sport and Fitness.
Why was this right course for you?
My interest in health and wellbeing started with my lifestyle change a few years ago, when I was highly overweight, and I lost over 30 kilograms. At that time of my life, I decided that I would like to help other people improve their health, enhance the perception of physical activity, and overcome the barriers individuals come across because of their health conditions.
After moving to the UK in 2016, I applied to study an NQ Sport and Fitness Level 6 at Perth College UHI. The following year, I progressed to the HNC Fitness, Health and Exercise, obtaining a Fitness Instructor Level 2 Award. The next year, I finished an HND in Fitness, Health and Exercise with the Personal Trainer Level 3 Award.
What do you think about the style of teaching and the support you receive from tutors and lecturers?
The quality of teaching and support from the tutors and lecturers is something that really stands out. Tutors make lessons interactive, interesting and ensure that every student is on the right path to understand the topic. Support from them is never questionable, as they are always available to help on an individual level. Their support does not stop just regarding academic skills, tutors are happy to discuss any other situations that can affect the studies and help you get back on track.
Have you been involved in any sports, social or cultural clubs or activities whilst at the university?
I have been involved with the Sport and Fitness Ambassadors team. I worked with other students, and jointly with the Sport and Fitness academic staff, to enhance the student experience and assist with various projects.
Have you undertaken any student placements?
I had a Work Placement at one of the Boarding Schools in Perth, where I worked with the PE department. After completing the mandatory hours, I continued - on an almost daily basis - volunteering and providing physical activity sessions to the pupils and staff throughout all year.
During my HND studies, we worked with other students with residents of a Care home. For three months, we delivered weekly sessions for strength and balance to decrease the risk of falls demonstrated many benefits and improvements in the client's physical performance and wellbeing. Good practice in this intergenerational project was recognised by others and presented at the College Expo 2019.
Have you contacted our Careers and Employability team for any advice?
Personal academic tutors provide me with additional information about study and career options according to my career ambitions.
What career direction would you like to take after studying?
The improvements in general wellbeing and functional fitness with individuals achieved during practical work strengthened my wish to work with the people in rehabilitation - the elderly and individuals with complex health conditions or challenging circumstances, to incorporate physical activity for improvements in their physical and mental health.
How do you feel your studies will help you in your career progression?
I gained many academic and soft skills throughout studying at Perth College UHI, with additional industry-specific qualifications. I have also developed personally and built-up resilience. Both combined, allows me to work on my career goals.
What advice would you give to those considering studying?
My advice would be that whatever your background is, there is a course that you will enjoy and allow you to start with your career. With dedication, hard work and support from the Perth College UHI staff, you will accomplish your goals.
