University Mental Health Day - 4 March 2021

University Mental Health Day - 4 March 2021

For #UniMentalHealthDay, our Student Services Team have put together a great blog:

It’s that time of year again where we want to focus on mental health, and bring awareness to the subject. We can’t get together physically this year; however, we have created for you lots of things for you to do - including interactive content to allow you to connect with your peers and some things you can do on your own to hopefully lift your spirits and help with lockdown days.

Looking to connect?  We’d love to hear your thoughts!

We have created some Padlet walls for you to add your comments, interact with others and come together to share your ideas. There are pages for gratitude posts, photos of your pets in lockdown, and a place to share ideas for what you find keeps you mentally healthy. Please click on the links, below, to take you to the individual pages. We would love to hear from you, so feel free to add your comments 😊

It’s all about self-care - after all, you can’t pour from an empty cup

Self-care can play an important part in keeping yourself mentally well. We all hear about self-care, and have no doubt heard of ways to incorporate it into your week. However, did you know that self-care is made up of lots of different considerations - including psychological, emotional, spiritual, personal, professional and physical?  Please see the self-care wheel below.

We have also attached a blank self-care wheel - so why not fill in some self-care options for yourself, under each heading?

Are you in need of relaxation?  Look no further

Yoga at your desk

It’s important to take some time during the day for yourself and to unwind. Lots of us are studying and working from home at the moment, and are looking for ways to factor in some relaxation whilst we are at our workstations. Watch the Yoga at your desk video. It’s quite short, so it’s easy to factor into your day - and comes highly recommended by members of the Student Services Team, who have tried and tested it!

Adult Colouring In

If you’re bored - and looking for something new to do to keep you occupied, that is grounding and relaxing - why not try adult colouring in books, or apps?

Music is such a powerful way to connect to your emotions. Tap into some upbeat tunes to keep your vibe high, or put on the chilled out mix to help you relax.

Sharing some student work

One of our Hospitality Services students, Sharon Barbour, allowed us to share extracts from her class presentation. She was looking at the connections between positive mental wellness, the foods we eat, and the exercise we take part in. Sharon went on to explain the important parts of our lives we are able to access when we are experiencing positive mental wellness, and we couldn’t agree more.

As part of Healthy Body Healthy Minds, our Hospitality Bronze SCQF Level 4 and Hospitality Silver SCQF Level 5 students created some healthy pizzas and smoothies. Well done to this class, we think the pizzas and smoothies look brilliant - and we agree with eating/drinking healthy balanced food and drink to help promote positive mental wellbeing!

Guided Visualisation

We hope you enjoy the things that we have put together for you for University Mental Health Day. It’s important you know you can speak to someone about your mental health, if you feel you need to. You can find our support information here. There are links to organisations and helplines, along with a list of Tayside Support Services and a UHI list of support helplines.
