Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Vivian Noori, and I’m originally from Iraq. I moved to Scotland in pursuit of new opportunities, especially in education and my passion for hairdressing. Growing up in Iraq has shaped much of who I am today, and being able to embrace a creative career like hairdressing has been a lifelong dream for me.
What course did you study at UHI Perth?
I studied Hairdressing at levels 5 and 6, completing the course in 2024. This two-year journey not only refined my technical skills but also built up my confidence in working with clients and exploring different styles of hairdressing.
How did you hear about UHI Perth?
I’ve always had a passion for hairdressing, and when I began searching for opportunities to pursue it professionally, I came across UHI Perth online. Their reputation for providing excellent vocational courses really stood out to me, and I felt it was the right place to turn my passion into a profession.
What were you doing before you came to UHI Perth?
Before I joined UHI Perth, I was studying English. It was important for me to strengthen my language skills, especially because I knew it would be crucial to my success in the UK. While studying English, I continued exploring my passion for hairdressing on the side, but I knew I needed formal training to take it further.
Why did you decide to pick this course?
Hairdressing has always been more than just a hobby for me - it's been a passion since childhood. I used to watch the work of hairstylists and experiment with my own hair and that of friends and family. The creativity, the artistry, and the personal connection you make with clients have always drawn me to the profession. I’ve always wanted to be a hairstylist, and enrolling in a course that would help me achieve that was the obvious choice.
What was your favourite thing about the course?
My favourite part of the course was definitely the practical sessions. It was during these hands-on experiences that I felt my skills really start to develop. Cutting, styling, colouring - it was all about applying what we learned in theory and getting to experiment with different techniques. Each session felt like I was growing closer to becoming the hairstylist I always dreamed of being.
Were there any standout/memorable moments from your course?
The most memorable moment for me was the fear I felt walking into my first hairdressing class. Despite my passion, I was nervous, not knowing if I would fit in or excel. But thanks to the incredible positivity and support of the teachers, particularly Paula, I quickly found my place. They created an environment where I could grow and flourish, and looking back now, I don’t think I could have made it through without their guidance and encouragement.
What knowledge, skills, and experience did you gain from your course that have helped you since leaving UHI Perth?
The course gave me much more than just technical hairdressing skills - it gave me confidence. I learned about cutting-edge techniques, hair colouring, and styling, but I also gained experience through work placements that helped me understand what it’s like to work in a professional environment. The course also helped me improve my communication and customer service skills, which are essential in hairdressing. Being able to apply those skills in real-world settings was invaluable, and it opened doors to new opportunities after graduation.
Did you undertake a placement or work experience whilst at UHI Perth?
Yes, I did. The placement gave me the chance to work in a real salon, where I could apply what I’d learned in the classroom in a professional setting. It was a great experience that allowed me to gain insight into how a salon operates on a daily basis.
What did you think about the styles of teaching, and the support you received from staff?
The teaching style was very supportive and practical, which really worked for me. The staff were exceptional, particularly Paula, who tailored her teaching to suit each student's needs. Her approach made it easy to understand difficult concepts, and she always made herself available for any extra help. She, and the rest of the staff, were understanding and genuinely wanted every student to succeed.
