Student Spotlight - Harris Burke
Not everyone knows what they want to study when they leave school, and some may need a little support to be able to follow their chosen career path. At UHI Perth, we provide full and part-time courses for people who might lack the confidence to study in a busy College environment. You will gain confidence, experience, and qualifications and many of our courses have support from Development Workers. In the blog this week, we meet one of our New Opportunities students 👇
Can you introduce yourself?
I am Harris Burke and I’m from Blairgowrie.
What course are you studying at UHI Perth?
I have just finished the first year of Next Steps 2 Learning, which is an NQ In Personal and Vocational Skills.
How did you hear about UHI Perth?
It was recommended by a support worker I had at the time and also my friend had attended the same course the year before.
What were you doing before you came to UHI Perth?
I wasn’t really doing anything as I had recently moved into my own house.
Why did you decide to pick this course?
I wasn’t sure of what I wanted to do so I wanted to see what options I had.
What is your favourite thing about the course?
Most likely the computing, IT, construction, and art classes. I also like that I’ve made good friends and have built my confidence. I like the staff that work on the course too.
Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?
Yes, there have been memorable and stand out moments. Including, making friends with a whole group of people in the class. Getting fresh eggs from my PAT’s chickens and being nominated for the student prize this year.
What knowledge, skills, and experience have you gained from your course that will help you when you leave UHI Perth?
I learned more about PC parts and building; how to make a CV; finding new opportunities; and more.
Have your lecturers been supportive during your studies?
Yes, they always help whenever I need them to. They are great!
Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?
I have been accepted onto another course for next year studying games development.
What do you like about the campus/facilities?
I like how the whole campus is close together, yet has so much open space, along with it having a gym, Starbucks, and study areas.
Have you enjoyed studying at UHI Perth? Any highlights?
Mostly, yes, I have. Highlights include meeting new people and passing all my subjects. Also, being accepted onto another course.
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of your studies?
I like playing games, but I enjoy learning about PC parts.
What are your future career plans?
I hope to learn animation and become an animator.
And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?
I’d say just dive into it, try what you think you’d like, and you might like it. There is something for everyone and it will take time to find it.
