Student Spotlight - Steven Mitchell
The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) has a requirement for all managers, operation managers, deputy managers, supervisors of care services, and new business residential care supervisors and deputies to have a Care Services Leadership and Management SVQ4 qualification. At UHI Perth, our course provides a good basis for managing a care service and supports individuals to undertake management responsibility. The course is work-based, so you can continue working whilst undertaking your studies, which is exactly what Steven did 👇
Can you introduce yourself?
Steven Mitchell, Aberdeenshire, I work for Aberdeenshire Health and Social Care Partnership.
What qualification did you complete with UHI Perth?
Care Services Leadership and Management – Level 4.
Why did you decide to gain this qualification through UHI Perth?
This was a choice given by my employer - the distance learning being my main reason for choosing UHI Perth.
How did you hear about the course?
Through my employer.
Completing a qualification and working full time can be difficult to juggle – can you describe any challenges you have faced and how you managed to overcome them?
It hasn’t been easy but having access to the Proof Positive App and a supportive assessor has been great. I have a very challenging and fast-paced workload, so jugging both hasn’t been easy, however Donald has been very supportive and accommodating.
How have you found the style of teaching and the support you have received from your trainer, employer, and assessor?
Great. It isn’t a sit down and complete exercise, it is very much something I can pick up and complete when I can and know I can contact my assessor at any time.
Has there been any standout/memorable moments?
Probably my first direct observation, it was really no pressure at all, my staff and I felt at ease.
How do you feel your qualification will help you in your career progression? What are your career goals and plans?
It will help me to stay in my current role and meet relevant SSSC requirements. I really just want to do the best I can in my current role but look forward to expanding my knowledge and career in complex care and mental health.
Do you have any hobbies or other interests, outside of your work?
I love the outdoors. I have various animals, including horses that I compete with - I really am a glutton for punishment! But mainly anything animal or sport/fitness-related.
Anything else you feel like telling us about your experience?
Not that I can think of. I have had a very relaxed and supportive experience.
And finally, what advice would you give to anyone thinking about doing a similar qualification with UHI Perth?
Go for it!! From admin to assessors everyone has been really friendly and will help as much as they can 😊
