Student Spotlight - Laura Christie
βFor anyone thinking of studying, I'd say do it. You are never too young or old.β
After returning to education after 20 years, Laura Christie is now flourishing as a hairdressing student. She chats to us about how she has found it π
What course are you studying at Perth College UHI, and what year are you currently in?
I am studying NQ hairdressing and currently finishing level 6. I started college in September 2020, in the midst of covid, which wasn't ideal, but I managed to complete level 5 learning from home and on campus when restrictions lifted.
What were you doing before you came to college?
Before I came to college, I was working 2 jobs - for a large supermarket chain and private caring.
Why did you decide to pick this course?
After leaving high school, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do so I took a year out to decide. After this, I fell pregnant, so I didn't go back to education. Hairdressing has always been something I was interested in so, once my children were older, I decided to go back to school... 20 years later.
What knowledge, skills and experience have you gained from your course that will help you when you leave Perth College UHI?
Being at college full time, and having to plan study time at home, has given me a chance to organise my time/days. This is a great way to prepare you for working.
What do you like about the campus?
The campus is easy to get around and has plenty of space within the buildings. Easy to access and ample parking.
What are your future career plans?
Once finished, I plan to work for myself as a mobile hairdresser. I feel this will work best for me and my lifestyle.
And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at Perth College UHI?
For anyone thinking of studying, I'd say do it. You are never too young or old. If school isn't for you, try college - itβs completely different and if you feel you are too old, again just do it. Perth College UHI really do cater for all.
