Students climbed their way up the career ladder

Two Perth College UHI students were recognised for their exceptional effort by winning a free space on an inclusive climbing course.

Sam Ashcroft, 19, from Aberdeen and Jess Smart, 19, from Perth, studying on the BA (Hons) Outdoor Education and Learning were awarded the ‘Golden Ticket’ award from the Sport and Fitness department, embarked on a ‘Climbing For All’ programme run by Able2Adventure.

Chris Heaney, Programme Leader explained: “They are both very worthy winners of the Golden Ticket award, which recognises student achievement, attitude, engagement, and endeavour.

“Sam's career goal is to work with people with disabilities. He’s been inspired to work with people with disabilities after seeing in his own family the support required to participate in outdoor activities and the positive outcomes that result.”

“Jess has experience of working with people with additional needs in an equine and mainstream sport setting and during her degree, took the opportunity to work with young people from Bertha Park High School in climbing and paddle sport. She demonstrated a real enthusiasm and ability in terms of her empathy and communication skills, working with the young people as individuals and supporting their various needs.”

Our Motor Vehicle lecturers get their running shoes on!

Duncan Reid and Norman Brunton completed a half marathon on Saturday 5th February.

They ran four circuits around Arthurs Seat in Edinburgh in horrible wind and rain and declared it as: “The hardest run we have ever done!”

Despite the weather, they both finished in a very respectable 1hr 56 min, Norman coming in at 59th and Duncan 60th out of 109 runners. Duncan said: “We are both delighted to have completed this challenge” while Norman added: “The weather meant it was pretty wild at the top, it felt like we weren’t moving at times!”

Prior to the race, Duncan explained: “Norman has been running for about four years and I took it up during the first lockdown. We have never been sporty but felt we needed to exercise more, and the benefit has been huge. Both our fitness and mental health is much improved. When I first started to run, I couldn’t complete 1k without stopping to walk but made a point of trying this every day. I slowly built-up to run further without stopping over 2/3 months. We have both run 10k races but never a half-marathon, however, are in good spirits about the challenge! My youngest son Owen has ADHD and is part of a brilliant club which is the reason for the fundraising.”

Our local Councillors and MSP visited the campus

Councillors Ian Massie and John Rebbeck were joined by Jim Fairlie MSP for a visit to Perth College UHI. They toured the campus, learning about initiatives and new investments within various departments, all aimed at giving our students the best possible learning and support experience.

Students Tackled Single-Use Products

As part of an enterprise activity class, a group of students decided to raise the funds needed to install PPE recycling bins in college to tackle the growing problem of the litter and landfill caused by single-use items, in particular masks, which students and staff were required to wear on campus. The difficult to recycle items were going to be processed by a specialist company who will use the materials to create new products.

Business and Administration student Eleanor Callaghan explained: “We noticed a dramatic increase in litter caused by masks and wanted to do something positive. Masks are difficult to recycle, but we found a company that could turn rubbish caused by PPE into useful items like benches and furniture.”

Working along with HISA Perth - the Students Association, the Business and Administration students ran a raffle to raise the necessary funds. Local businesses such as Rabbit Hole Cakes, Blend, Sandeman, and the Woodland Trust donated prizes for the raffles.

“Contacting local businesses took me out of my comfort zone, but it was good experience” said student Mark Cooke. “Their generosity, along with lecturers who donated prizes helped us to turn an idea into reality.”

The students were delighted to be able to order three recycling bins with the money raised. “It has been really rewarding to see the recycling bins in place, see that our teamwork has paid off and we have taken some positive action to tackle the single use plastic problem caused by PPE” added Eleanor.

We launched the first episode of our Project Car

The project allowed a variety of Motor Vehicle Body and Paint students at different levels to modify a vehicle together over the academic year and involved repairs, modifications, and a full paint process on the car.

In episode 1 of 3, we saw the student groups repair damage to the car and fit the new body kit, bonnet, and custom spoiler. They finished up by carrying out all the prep work so the car was ready to move through to the paint workshop for episode 2.

Our student hardship fund got a boost

As part of their Enterprise Project, students from the New Opportunities and Return to Learn course organised two historical guided tours in and around Perth.

The first walk “Hobble around the Cobbles” was a one-hour city tour that started at Rosslyn House and the second walk was “Mysteries, Myths and Meditation”, a more strenuous walk up Kinnoull Hill.

The event raised money with donations and a raffle; for the Development Trust student hardship and scholarship fund, and Perthshire Abandoned Dogs Society (PADS).

UHI was rated best in Scotland for postgraduate student satisfaction

UHI received a score of 95% student satisfaction in the 2022 Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey. The result meant that UHI achieved the highest rating of any Scottish university and was ranked fourth out of the 91 participating institutions across the UK. Coordinated by Advance HE, the Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey invites students to have their say on taught postgraduate university programmes. Students are asked about areas including teaching, assessment, and support.

Over 120 students from across the UHI partnership completed this year's survey. Respondents rated UHI particularly highly for organisation, engagement, teaching, assessment, and support.

Commenting on the results, Dr Iain Morrison, Dean of Student Experience, said: "These are exceptional results. Students are the best judges of what makes a good education and to be rated highest in the country is to the great credit of our wonderful staff. Coming so soon after our extremely high undergraduate student satisfaction results, this survey confirms that UHI really should be the first choice for anyone considering postgraduate study this year."

Our Digital Skills Academy was shortlisted for a national Award

We were shortlisted in the Skills Development Award category at this year’s CDN College Awards 2022, which “recognise the talent, innovation and achievement demonstrated by colleges, their staff and their learners.”

The project, entitled: “The Digital Academy’, run in partnership with Perth and Kinross Council, created a valuable opportunity for the development of digital skills for those furthest from employment. The overarching aim was to develop skills required to enable learners to contribute to the regional economy.

Jill Elder, Sector Development Director said: “Learners were supported to develop digital skills across a range of technologies through a six-week college programme. This enabled them to gain confidence to engage with digital employment opportunities in the region.

“The programme was delivered face-to-face to encourage interpersonal development and peer working but when required learners could switch to a hybrid approach to ensure continuity of learning whilst also preparing them for today’s workplace. This flexible approach suited the learners, attendance and engagement was very positive with a 100% completion of the programme.”

Jamie May, Senior Project Officer, Perth & Kinross Council added: “All learners successfully completed a relevant work placement and enjoyed the experience. 65% of the learners joined a full-time college course this month and the remaining 35% continue to be supported by the team to move into employment, a successful and positive outcome for all. With an ever-changing labour market, the students who took part in the course added to their skill set and increased their employability and progression prospects.”

Our estates team braved the shave!

Caroline and Sandy shaved their heads to raise money for their dear friend and colleague, Sharon.

Sharon explained: “I have worked at the college for eight years and it is by far the best job I have had. I feel that it is more of a family, as everyone is there for each other. I have been diagnosed with lung cancer, which is stage 4 as it has spread outwith the lung. I have been put on immunotherapy for palliative treatment, which means it can be treated not cured. It’s a new treatment and that’s why we need to raise as much as we can, because at the moment you only get funded for 2 years of treatment.”

Thanks to generous donations, the pair raised £955 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
