Alumni Spotlight - Nicola Parr
“It has been a great journey that has taken me further than I ever hoped to achieve.”
In this week’s blog, we meet a Business and Management student who returned to education - alongside working a professional job – to gain new knowledge and skills that could be implemented to drive forward her future career.
What is your name, and where are you from?
Nicola Parr, from Perth.
What course did you study at Perth College UHI?
I completed BA Business and Management in June 2021.
What were you doing before you came to college?
I left school and started an administrative career in local Government which I continued to do up until I had my first child and relocated to Perth. Thereafter, I took on varying roles in hospitality, childcare, and retail - which fitted around my family circumstances. Once my family had grown up, I then returned to work in an administration role for Perth and Kinross Council.
Why did you decide to pick this course?
HNC Administration and IT was initially undertaken to gain up to date knowledge and understanding of administration procedures, Microsoft applications, technology, etc, to carry out my role more efficiently. I then progressed to HND and finally the BA. These qualifications helped to underpin the practical experience and knowledge I have gained throughout working in multiple areas and have enabled me to gain much knowledge in many new skills to use in my future career.
What was your favourite thing about the course?
The course for me was perfect. There was flexibility around lectures which fitted around my work pattern. The course content was relatable, as I was in an administrative role already, and I gained considerable IT knowledge to use in this role as my studies progressed.
During the pandemic, how did the style of teaching change? Were your lecturers supportive during this time?
Classes were all online, which suited my circumstances by fitting around my work. Lecturers were extremely supportive during this time, ensuring we had enough resources for each lesson.
Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?
I have enjoyed all moments of my course. Areas where I was pushed out of my comfort zone, such as Presentation Skills stood out, as this was an achievement and something I was not used to. The great lecturers that were always there fully supporting and encouraging, undoubtedly led me to achieve my end goal of BA in Business and Management, which I am truly grateful.
Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?
This journey has been both personal and professional. I have become more confident, underpinned my practical knowledge with a formal qualification, and have gained promotion with my current employer.
What do you like about the campus?
I attended a maximum of two classes per week, prior to the pandemic. I did enjoy the interaction with lecturers and fellow students in the class face-to-face.
Have you enjoyed studying at Perth College UHI?
Absolutely, it has been a great journey that has taken me further than I ever hoped to achieve. I met highly supportive, encouraging lecturers who instilled belief and confidence in me that I could achieve my studies and ultimately a degree and I also met other students, of all ages, backgrounds, and countries. An all-round great experience!
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of college?
My studies became my hobby and interest! Unfortunately, I did not have much time for anything else and with working 30 hours a week on top! Perhaps now I can take up an interest now my study days are over.
What are your plans, now that you have finished your course?
I now hope to apply the learning and knowledge I have gained in my new promoted role.
And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at Perth College UHI?
