I am studying Business Management, with Human Resources management. I have just completed my 3rd year and will be kicking off with my Honours degree in the same subject in the next academic year. At Perth College UHI, I started at the HNC level back in 2018. After completing my Higher National Diploma (HND) in 2019, I decided to enroll for the degree and the journey continues. For the past three years, in Perth College UHI, I would proudly say that it has been a fantastic experience that has highly impacted on my currently holistic self.
What were you doing before you came to college?
I came to Scotland in 2018, where I started studying at HNC level. Before then, I had just completed my high school studies in Kenya and was fresh from high school and young and naïve - exactly like any other high school leaver, however excited about joining uni.
Why did you decide to pick this course?
Since I was young, I always wanted to be a leader - a service giver - and throughout my primary and secondary education I was a leader. Consequently, during my last year in high school, I envisioned on what course would fulfil my passion in leadership and service to people, and it wouldn’t have been any other than Business Management with HRM. In this course, you will get to lead, manage, make decisions on various issues, learn about people and their different personalities - and that is all I ever wanted to do.
What is your favourite thing about the course?
The course is enjoyable and exactly what I expected. It is diverse to ideas and opportunities. I chose to study it, and I love it. It is all I ever wanted to pursue. Besides, I would say the lecturers are amazing - so enthusiastic, passionate and committed to their work. They hold a great know-how on various topics and concerns related to the course and this makes it more interesting and easier to learn.
During the pandemic, how did the style of teaching change? Were your lecturers supportive during this time?
The pandemic was an unforeseen blow. All the face-to-face classes and interpersonal relationships were cut, with the shift to purely online learning. However, this didn’t stop the lecturers from committing themselves to providing maximum support. They have been a very huge support in numerous ways - keeping constant communication through calls and emails, to just making sure that we were all doing good and coping with the situation. They all deserve an Oscar, haha!
Has there been any stand out/memorable moments from your course?
Yes, while studying my higher diploma, I was the student representative for my class. I would say that I did my best, as my classmates nominated me for the OBI awards where I won the trophy of the ‘best class representative’. Moving to the degree level, my role as a class representative did not change and neither did the nomination. This year, I have won the trophy for the best overall student. I am very happy and proud of myself. I always try to produce my best in any role given, and I am more than excited to see the pay off!
You were one of the recipients of the ‘Best Overall Student Award’ at this year’s OBI Awards. How did it feel to win?
It was a mixture of emotions. During my higher diploma, I won the trophy of the best class representative. When I moved to the degree level, I took the role again and during the pandemic tried my best to help most of the students where I could. At this year’s OBI Awards, I was shortlisted in the best class representative and most inspiring student. It was a surprise, because I did not expect it. When I ended up winning the Best Overall Student, I was dumbfounded!
I was certain of winning in either of the shortlisted categories, but it didn’t cross my mind on the Best Overall Student. So, I would say to me, it was like a dream come true!
Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?
My journey in Perth College UHI has been tremendous. I am currently the secretary of the Afro Caribbean Society and, during the last HISA elections, ended up fourth in the position of the Vice President of Activities and Welfare.

Almost everything. The campus environment is very welcoming with the lecturers and other members of staff. The library is an amazing place to be, and the campus is diverse and inclusive.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of college?
I do. I love reading and writing. I am currently writing the first volume of my book series, which I am hoping will be out by the autumn of next year.
Besides that, coming to Scotland was part of my passion in exploring new places and learning about different cultures. So, if I am not reading a book, I am in a bus or train to any city in Scotland or doing the same concurrently.
Throughout the pandemic, I have also tried various Scottish recipes - just a way of saying that I love cooking!
