Student Spotlight - Heidi Cantarero Lopez

“Don’t be afraid to try, or apply, for any course. The lecturers always try their best to guide you and help. There’s never a perfect time to start something, but it’s never too late.” And this is exactly what International student, Heidi, did. Read her experience of returning to education, in a different country, and the progression she has managed to achieve in a short space of time.

What is your name, and where are you from?

My name is Heidi, and I am from Spain.

What course are you studying at Perth College UHI, and what year are you currently in?

I just finished HND Computer Science.

What were you doing before you came to college?

I was mainly focused on my two wee boys and doing part-time jobs.

Why did you decide to pick this course?

Many years ago, I studied Computing and Industrial Design in my country. I always liked this field and new ongoing technologies.

What is your favourite thing about the course?

What I enjoyed the most is the diversity of modules. You do a bit of everything in your first years, which helps you to find what you really enjoy. I feel that’s the base to expand the path that you want to focus on in your future years of studying and professional career. Also, the lecturers are always willing to help and guide you along the way.

During the pandemic, how did the style of teaching change? Were your lecturers supportive during this time?

It’s been a hard year for all of us, and of course with a lot of new changes. Communication has been online, but the classes were scheduled with normal timetables for different subjects - which helped to create a weekly routine. We had support by email, or meetings 1 to 1 when needed it. I am now so used to having the recordings available for every subject and class. You can review them at any time, I am going to miss that shortly!

Has there been any stand out/memorable moments from your course?

Last year, when first started in College, I wasn’t confident with my English level and I was feeling very outdated along with a busy family life, so I decided to start from an NQ level. After a few weeks, I felt more confident, and I was able to remember more than I thought of previous years of studying. By the end of November, my lecturers and PATs from NQ and HNC, transferred my year and helped me to catch up on all the subjects and assignments missed. Thanks to all my lecturers, they trusted me and gave me the chance to skip a year - catching up quickly. I will always be so grateful to them for that opportunity and all the support they gave me.

What do you like about the campus?

I absolutely adore Perth College UHI Nursery. It’s been a pleasure for me to meet such a caring staff and having my little one in the best hands, while I was at College. This year is the last one there for my son, before P1, and I already miss them!

I also enjoyed the library services, as they have great staff and resources.

And the most important bit for me in the mornings, is the coffee across all the buildings. It’s great, and always comes with a smile from the lovely staff 😊

Have you enjoyed studying at Perth College UHI?

Of course, it’s been a great experience. I have met great friends during these two years, all from different backgrounds and ages. The staff are always there when you need it, even for a wee talk - it’s just a great support.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of college?

I love to bake; draw; design; go on wee walks; and spend time with my kids, family, and friends.

What are your plans, for after you finish your course?

I plan to continue my third year at Perth College UHI, and I am looking forward to progressing into a job related to this field to gain experience and apply all the skills gained over this time.

And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at Perth College UHI?

Just do it! Don’t be afraid to try, or apply, for any course. The lecturers always try their best to guide you and help. There’s never a perfect time to start something, but it’s never too late. Regardless if you are young, a mature student like me, or your background or circumstances - this time you can be yourself and improve what you like the most.

It’s not too late to begin something positive in 2021! We are still taking applications for THIS September. Studying at Perth College UHI gives you the perfect opportunity towards securing a successful future.
