Student Spotlight - Nicole Chatila
If you’re interested in a future in the sports industry, there’s no better place to learn than at Perth College UHI. We offer four strands of courses: sport, fitness, sports therapy and outdoor education - each unique in its content. Our team of industry-practised academics ensure students have an excellent experience and gain academic qualifications, as well as industry-recognised certificates.
Nicole Chatila came to college straight from school and, alongside her studies, works at the Academy of Sport and Wellbeing. We caught up with her to find out how she progressed through the college, and what her job at the college gym entails.
What course did you study at Perth College UHI?
I started with HNC Fitness, Health, and Exercise, then went onto the HND, and I am now currently in my 3rd year of BSc Sport and Fitness.
Why did you decide to choose this course?
I have always had a passion for fitness, but I never knew how to get started. Originally, I was going to stay on for 6th year at school. However, I wasn’t sure it would be the best use of my time - as there was nothing for me to do at school, which would help me get to where I wanted to be. I had a meeting with Lisa Dods – from the Sport and Fitness department - and everything she said about the course, opportunities, and where it could take me in the future, ticked all the right boxes.
How did you find your time studying at Perth College UHI? Did you enjoy your course?
I thoroughly enjoyed the courses I have done at Perth College UHI. All of the lecturers are supportive, easy to get along with, and want the best for you. They always push you to be better and make the most of opportunities that come up. You are surrounded by people with similar interests, from all age ranges. The course content has been interesting and the modules all closely link together, which helps you as you progress.
You now work at the Academy of Sport and Wellbeing - can you tell us about your journey from going from a student, to an employee of the college?
When I first started out as a student, I was inspired by the instructors and lecturers as they knew so much about the fitness industry. They also taught classes, and helped others with confidence, which is something I never thought I would have been able to do!
Through practice in modules, I got more experience, knowledge, and confidence in my ability to instruct and help others - which was then noticed by Mandy – the ASW Gym and Fitness Manager. I was in the gym one day and Mandy approached me saying she had seen what I do, and that my lecturers had recommended me to her. I was over the moon, and was offered an interview not long after that conversation. I went through the interview process, taught a spin class as part of my interview (the first ever time I had taught it properly), and then soon became part of the welcoming team.
What is your job title, and what does the job entail?
I’m a Health and Fitness Instructor. The role includes; teaching fitness classes (in person, and now online); gym inductions; being on the gym floor, and available if members need help/or have questions; personal training; consultations; ensuring the gym is clean, and a safe space; setting up and dismantling equipment; helping out on reception when needed; and being a positive welcoming member of staff, that people feel they can approach.
Has your role changed, during the pandemic?
Yes, which I am completely grateful for. We have used our online platform to stay connected with members. We have done Facebook live fitness classes, workouts on the app, and helpful posts. I also got to see the behind the scenes side of the ASW ‘s online presence - such as statistics and performance of posts, and creating plans for the future.
When we reopened, I was classed as high risk due to my Crohn's disease - so it was safer for me to stay at home and focus on the social posts and some of the challenges you may see on Facebook. I also worked on the app, and other bits and bobs. The rest of the gym team have done an amazing job, and I can’t wait to be back with them!
The ASW is very good at adapting/changing to the current climate. Can you tell us about how you have helped with this agile approach?
I completely agree! I have helped look at what the public and our members may struggle with in these current times, and create ways to overcome these barriers. Such as: posting tips and tricks, providing motivation, and making it clear that ASW is there to support as much as we can.
We look at what classes and activities members enjoy most, and ensure that we include them into our timetable - or as a monthly challenge. We also provide workouts, challenges, and advice - that will be useful if you are a complete beginner, or for someone that is more advanced. We have taught classes with tins of beans, or a bottle of screen wash, because not everyone has access to equipment. This encourages others to be creative and make the most of what they have in their homes
During these challenging times, our mental health is so important. Do you think that the way the ASW has adapted during the pandemic, has helped to offer a form of escape and support for people?
It definitely has. We educate others on the benefits of exercise on mental health and how ten minutes of activity can make a massive difference to how you are feeling - as well as what you can do to look after your mental health, especially in times like this. We know so many people are struggling, which is okay, so we try to provide support - especially if its health and fitness related - and ensure our platform is a positive place to visit, instead of negative places such as the news!
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Seeing or hearing about others doing well - such as a member telling you that a piece of advice you gave helped them out in some way, or they enjoyed a class that you taught. Also, because I have a genuine passion for health and fitness and helping others, it doesn’t always feel like a job.
The ASW has a great community spirit amongst its members. Do you think this provides a different gym experience?
It really does. Going into a gym that has a great community, makes you feel welcome and gives you a sense of belonging - which can be important. It makes working there - and working out there - so much better as you get to know people, have fun, and you feel more comfortable to ask someone for help.
Finally - what advice would you give someone that is thinking about joining a gym, but is nervous to make that first step?
The first step into the gym is probably the most nerve-wracking thing out of your whole health and fitness journey, but once you are past the front door of the gym - you will be fine!
You can book an induction with one of our instructors, in advance, so we get to know how we can help you. We make sure the experience is tailored to you, as well as showing you around the facilities. You can bring a friend/family member for support, if you like 😊
If you are too nervous to walk into the gym, please book an appointment with one of the friendly ASW team and we can meet you in the Webster building for a chat over a coffee - so you can get to know us. After all - we aren’t there to intimidate you, or make you feel like you never want to visit a gym - we are there to help you.
