Personal Trainer, Samantha Jack, is currently in her fourth year of the degree and chatted to us about why she chose this course.
Did you consider other universities when you were deciding to study?
No, Perth College UHI was convenient with having a daughter. Not having to travel was a factor, so I could fit more around her and my work.
Why was this right course for you?
At first, I was not sure. As a Personal Trainer, I felt it was the next step to take, and it has definitely been the right one.
What do you think about the style of teaching and the support you receive from tutors and lecturers?
All tutors have their own style of teaching on the course - all exceptional in their own way. Very helpful, knowledgeable, and make learning enjoyable - especially as an older student. Being taught in a classroom base, rather than a huge lecture hall, definitely has its benefits. Our cohort have become good friends.
Have you been involved in any sports, social or cultural clubs or activities whilst at the university?
I’m a huge fan of the university gym, which I attended prior to the pandemic 3 to 4 times a week. It has excellent facilities and staff.
What career direction would you like to take after studying?
I applied for the MSc pre-registration in Physiotherapy for January 2022 and was placed on the waiting list. I had thoroughly enjoy working as a community physiotherapist.
How do you feel your studies will help you in your career progression?
I am hoping achieving a first-class honours degree, along with my work ethic and experience, will help me eventually gain a space on the MSc in Physiotherapy.
What advice would you give to those considering studying?
Be prepared to time manage well, do your work, and enjoy it. It’s not an easy course, it will test you in many ways, but it’s worth it.
What are your favourite things about Perth College UHI?
The staff, our cohort, and the gym facilities.
Best thing about living in the Highlands and Islands?
I live in Perth - if you like the outdoors, like I do, it’s not far to go until you’re in a beautiful location. Perth is quite a quiet city.
Anything else you feel like telling us about your experience at Perth College UHI?
I think the exceptional teaching team at the university has made going back to learning enjoyable. In particular, Alan Stewart, as he makes learning extremely fun and understandable, and Kelli Cochran-Sharp. The events are a definite enjoyable learning experience.
