Stay active on campus
We are very proud of our modern multi-storey leisure and wellbeing facility based here at Perth College UHI. Opened in 2016, the Academy of Sport and Wellbeing (ASW) offers leisure, gym and climbing facilities – as well as discounted hair, beauty and wellbeing treatments – to staff, students and the general public.
Skye Pollock, a Creative and Digital Media Foundation Apprenticeship student, talks us through the benefits of joining the ASW if you are a student here at Perth College UHI.
There is a great new class timetable
The Academy of Sport and Wellbeing gym offers a wide variety of classes and programmes to help you exercise effectively. The extensive opening times allow you to fit in workouts before class, between classes or even in your lunch break! The classes have an emphasis on fun and working to your own level with friendly experienced instructors to help you achieve your fitness goals. Whether you are looking for classes to help you stretch and relax or something more invigorating to improve your stamina, endurance, muscle tone and strength – there is something for everyone.
There is a link between physical activity and study
Exercise has many benefits in relation to your academic performance. Going to the gym doesn’t have to take time out of your studying either – it can be beneficial to give yourself a break and get active. Going to the gym can help improve your attention span and your ability to retain knowledge, as well as offer employability skills such as teamwork, motivation and time management. Setting aside time each week to come to the gym shows you can balance college work as well focus on keeping yourself healthy too.
A balanced diet is also vital to both studying and exercise and the ASW offers personal training food plans which include advice on weekly food intake structure and food types. Basic advice starts from £40.
There is a great social aspect and you will meet new people
The new academic year has started, so why not try to start a new routine too? The ASW gym is a great place to meet new people, and coming to classes will let you make friends with similar interests and boost your confidence. Having a friend to workout with can also be beneficial, as you can motivate each other to work harder. You will also feel much better socialising at the gym because you are working out at the same time.
There are lots of health benefits
As well as improving your physical health, exercise can also help lower levels of anxiety or stress. The ASW gym is ideal as it is right on campus and can offer relief after a difficult class or lecture. Exercising often improves your quality of sleep which will help you get the most out of your learning in college. If you are a member of a sports club, coming to the gym can also help you to improve your performance.
There is extensive equipment and training types available
It is important to keep your workouts varied in order to stay motivated, the ASW gym offers both cardiovascular and strength resistance equipment as well as specialist classes. The climbing wall offers a fun way to exercise for people of all ages and experience, and you may even find a new hobby!
There is a variety of programmes on offer
The ASW offers both fun and high intensity classes - so whatever class you chose, you will burn calories and keep fit. HIIT and Tabata classes are designed to maximise your workouts, whilst social circuits are perfect for beginners looking to make new friends and find a new hobby. The ASW caters for people at every stage of fitness - from your first day, right through to developing your fitness and achieving new challenges. There really is something for everyone.
