Student Spotlight - Rachel Rimmer

Student Spotlight - Rachel Rimmer

Our Social and Vocational Studies department is filled with a specialist team of dedicated and qualified professionals, with extensive experience teaching and supporting students who benefit from additional support for their learning. Our students can expect a supportive learning environment in which to build confidence, skills for life and independence. They are also given the chance to try different subjects, receive recognition for the work they do, and gain support with their next steps.

Rachel is currently studying in the SVS department and kindly shared how she has found the experience.

Can you introduce yourself?

Rachel Rimmer, from Perth.

What course are you studying at UHI Perth?

New Skills 3.

What were you doing before you came to college?

I was at school, St Johns Academy. They supported me during my time there. They considered my additional learning needs, and they provided emotional support. I hoped it would be the same at college. It was!

Why did you decide to pick this course?

The school helped me, and it was the best fit for me at the time.

What has been the best part of your course?

The people I have met, both staff and students. I quite like some of the subjects. They have given me new opportunities to learn. I like cooking and board games, which is good for making new friends while we are in class.

Have you made friends on your course?

Yes, I have, although some of them have moved onto other courses.

Has your confidence grown since being at UHI Perth?

Yes, because I have some learning difficulties and some health issues, in the past I used to follow my friends. Now I take my own lead.

Are your lecturers and support workers friendly and helpful?

Yes, they are, they have helped me a lot through the years. They made it not scary leaving school and coming here. They were supportive when I had to take time off unwell and helped me to come back when I was feeling better. They deserve special thanks.

What do you like about the campus?

I like the campus because it is inclusive. I quite like the canteen.

Have you enjoyed studying at UHI Perth?

Yes, definitely.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of college?

I quite like art. I have been going to Makaton choir once a week for a long time now and I do Boccia on the same day.

What do you plan on doing next after you finish your course?

I am progressing to the Stepping Out course.

And finally, would you recommend the SVS courses at UHI Perth to someone that is thinking about coming here to study?

I would recommend it and I would say to anyone with learning difficulties, “Go for it!”

In line with Curriculum for Excellence, we provide a range of courses, which have been designed to encourage progression through core skills and work experience in order to develop sustainable skills for life.

A parent of a student who was in our department said: “I can’t praise the SVS department at UHI Perth enough! They are an incredible team of dedicated people with the students interests at heart. The time my son spent there has been transformational for him.”
