“I have gained lots of skills, knowledge and experience from my time at UHI Perth.”

Early Years and Childcare is a growth industry requiring new and talented people to enter the workforce. At UHI Perth, we offer a range of relevant and registrable qualifications for those wishing to work in this exciting and important sector. In this week’s blog, we meet a student who is pursuing a career in primary teaching.

Can you introduce yourself?

Jackie Mackechnie and I am from a small rural village on the outskirts of Stirling.

What course are you studying at UHI Perth?

I’m in my 3rd year of Child & Youth Studies.

This leading BA (Hons) Child and Youth Studies degree will give you a rigorous understanding of the specific concerns associated with child and youth issues in this region and within the broader context of the UK and Europe.

The course is taught entirely online via the university's virtual learning environment (VLE) and you will be supported locally by your personal academic tutor face-to-face, via email, telephone and online, which means that you can fit your studies around your personal and professional commitments.

How did you hear about UHI Perth?

Researching online.

What were you doing before you came to UHI Perth?

Working for my husband’s business and a stay-at-home mum.

Why did you decide to pick this course?

In order to become a primary teacher.

What is your favourite thing about the course?

The support from my PAT, Angela Barrie. She is absolutely outstanding and I couldn't have done it without her 😊.

Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?

Particular lecturers going above and beyond to support my learning.

What knowledge, skills and experience have you gained from your course that will help you when you leave UHI Perth?

I have gained lots of skills, knowledge and experience from my time at UHI Perth - all of which I will take forward to my PDGE and career as a teacher.

Have you undertaken a placement or work experience whilst at UHI Perth?

I was working full-time up until recently and because of this I have managed to peruse a placement in a primary school.

Have your lecturers been supportive during your studies?

Yes, they have.

Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?

Class Rep.

What do you like about the campus/facilities?

Unfortunately, I never really visit as it is an online course and Covid restrictions stopped me.

Have you enjoyed studying at UHI Perth? Any highlights?

I absolutely have and would recommend my course and UHI to others, in particular to mature students.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of your studies?

I enjoy playing the piano and going long walks with my two dogs.

What are your future career plans?

I have been offered a place at Strathclyde University to undertake my PGDE in primary education, all thanks to UHI.

And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?

It is absolutely worth it, and I have enjoyed it very much. The highs and lows of further education as a mature student has taught me a lot about myself. I have managed to study full-time while raising my children all from the comfort of my home. If you are ever in doubt about anything while studying, just ask!
