Modern Apprenticeship Spotlight - Aiden Smith

With dreams of becoming a successful electrician, Aiden opted to do a Modern Apprenticeship after leaving school.

Aiden Smith, from Perth
What course are you studying at UHI Perth, and what year are you currently in?
Electrical Apprenticeship, SVQ Level 3 Electrical Installation through my employer, JGM.
How did you hear about UHI Perth?
I’ve lived in Perth my whole life, so I heard about it when I was in high school.
What were you doing before you came to college?
I used to work in Tesco.
Why did you decide to pick this course?
I decided I wanted to become an electrician when I was in secondary school.
What is your favourite thing about the course?
I love all the practical work we get to do, as it helps improve our skills.
Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?
Completing the goals that I have been set by my lecturers to a high standard.
What knowledge, skills and experience have you gained from your course that will help you when you leave UHI Perth?
I’ve gained a much better overall understanding of wiring systems and how to wire them correctly to a high standard.
Have your lecturers been supportive during your studies?
Yes, they are really supportive and always encouraging me.
What do you like about the campus/facilities?
I enjoy the gym facilities and being able to hire the games hall out for futsal is great as well.
Have you enjoyed studying at UHI Perth? Any highlights?
Yes, I have enjoyed my time studying here.
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of college?
I play football on Saturdays and enjoy watching it as well.
What are your future career plans?
I plan to complete my apprenticeship and hopefully become a successful electrician.
And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?
The more effort you put into the course, the more you will get out of it.
