Student Spotlight - Sarah Main
At UHI Perth, we offer a wide range of courses within Admin and IT, from NQ level right through to Degrees, including PDAs for professional development.
We talk to employers locally and nationally to ensure that all our courses provide the most current knowledge and skills required in the workplace. The flexibility of our courses allows students working full-time to study via distance learning and upskill in their current job. Sarah is a great example of this, and she shares her story with us π
Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Sarah Main, and I am from a town called Keith which is located in Northeast Scotland.
What course are you studying at UHI Perth, and what year are you currently in?
I am currently in my second year of the HND Administration and IT course. I previously completed the HNC Administration and IT course in 2020. Both courses have been undertaken via Distance Learning.
How did you hear about UHI Perth?
My employer explored options of courses following on from an SVQ which I completed in 2019. UHI Perth had an administration course available suited my requirements and learning style.
What were you doing before you came to UHI Perth?
I currently work for Springfield Properties Plc as an Administration Assistant. I have studied both courses (HNC/HND Administration and IT) whilst working full time.
Why did you decide to pick this course?
I wanted to develop my knowledge and skills within administration duties to allow me to progress within my career. My current course has been undertaken through a progression from the HNC.
What is your favourite thing about the course?
The variety of content covered in each unit is relevant to my career and the support from lecturers and fellow students is positive.
Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?
Getting an A for year 1 and meeting fellow Distance Learners whilst working on the teamwork unit.
What knowledge, skills and experience have you gained from your course that will help you when you leave UHI Perth?
I have always been an organised person, however with managing both college and work commitments as a Distance Learner, I have had to maintain focus on my time management skills. Due to the thorough assessment style of this course, I have also been able to develop my writing and proofreading skills. Leadership skills were also developed during my time at college as I undertook the role of team leader in one of my recent modules.
Have your lecturers been supportive during your studies?
All of the lecturers which I have corresponded with are approachable and friendly. Being online based there are questions around the coursework that can arise, some topics would be discussed during the class session by other students asking a similar questions nevertheless quick responses are received when emailing to clarify any matters.
Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?
I have progressed from the HNC to HND course, and I am currently looking into the possibility of progressing further into the BA Business and Management Year 3 programme.
Have you enjoyed studying at UHI Perth? Any highlights?
Yes, being online based and undertaking full time employment means that I am unable to attend classes at the time that they are running live, therefore the class recordings have been really beneficial to me as I can stay up to date with the coursework covered by watching the classes back in my own time.
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of college?
Outside of college, I spend most of my time with my dog Lady, she is a 9-year-old Hungarian Vizsla. I also like to maintain a healthy balanced lifestyle by attending my local gym regularly.
What are your future career plans?
I am eager to continue to develop my knowledge within the administration sector. I hope to become a high performing employee within the construction industry, gaining more experience and applying my skills and knowledge obtained through my education at UHI Perth.
And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?
UHI Perth offers flexibility and support, as well as a variety of courses to choose from. Donβt be fearful to go into further education at any stage in your life. In my experience from both of my courses there has been a variety of ages and existing skills/abilities. If you focus on putting in the time and work, you will successfully achieve your goals.
