Student Spotlight - Marcela Lackova
Many of our students start at Perth College UHI to learn the English language needed to achieve their goals in study, work, or everyday life. We are dedicated to providing a first-class experience for our international students, and supporting them every step of the way. For this week’s student spotlight, we chatted to Marcela - to hear about her journey studying with us.
What course are you studying at Perth College UHI, and what year are you in?
I am studying Administration and IT, and this year is my HNC level. I finished the NC last year.
What were you doing before you came to college?
Five years ago, I came to Scotland - from Slovakia - after I had decided to finish my career in a bank as a Financial Advisor. Before I started the Administration and IT course, I studied English at Perth College UHI and I worked as a Housekeeping Assistant at The Gleneagles Hotel.
Why did you decide to pick this course?
Before I have started this course, I was uncertain what I wanted to do and how I wanted to guide my career. I chose this course, because the variety of the subjects will lead to more opportunities that will be available to me to work in different sectors.
What is your favourite thing about the course?
My favourite thing about this course is that it shows me how to work independently, but on the other hand, I found a perfect balance between working alone and working in a team. I also like to study at my own pace, which I'm allowed to do. Some subjects are straight forward for me, and I can do the tasks in advance.
Has there been any stand out/memorable moments from your course?
I was nominated in the OBI Awards 2020, for the ‘Most Inspiring Student’ Award. I didn't win, but even the nomination was a big motivation for me and made me happy that someone appreciated my hard work.
What do you like about the campus?
The campus is well equipped, and every single student can find something there related to their hobbies and interests.
Have you enjoyed studying at Perth College UHI?
Yes, 100%. The lecturers, and other College staff, have been helpful and supportive. They have encouraged me to do my best, and have always been available to advise me if I was uncertain and needed to ask questions.
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of college?
My biggest hobby is working out and baking cakes. During the second lockdown, I started with yoga - which helps me to concentrate, controls my emotion, and be more focused. When I have more free time, I like to do short courses - either related to my college course, or my interests. Also, I like travelling - but because of the pandemic, it's not possible just now.
What are your plans for after you finish your course?
I plan to continue with my personal development in my chosen expertise - and progress in a job that would suit the knowledge I have gained. I plan to work on my way up the ladder until I achieve everything I’m aiming for.
And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at Perth College UHI?
Don't be afraid of taking the opportunity to develop your education level. You will get all the support you need from the college - so put in the time, work really hard, be humble but confident, and you will achieve your goals. Hard work pays off, working really hard is what successful people do. You can do it. Good luck 🙂
